EOS tracks Artemis II Orion capsule from Mount Stromlo

On 2 April, EOS Space Systems successfully tracked NASA's Artemis II Orion capsule from its Mount Stromlo facility in Canberra.

Tracking began at 15:20 UTC, with the capsule acquired once it entered the telescope’s field of view. EOS then maintained persistent tracking on the spacecraft. The sequence captured in EOS’ tracking video (shown below) reflects observations at approximately 16:00 UTC.

The activity was conducted under contract with the xGEO team, working with the Joint Commercial Operations cell led by Trusted Space, which coordinates with NASA. Although there were difficult weather conditions, EOS was able to acquire and maintain track on the distant, low-visibility object in the cislunar domain using passive optical sensing from EOS' tracking network.

It’s a practical example of the conditions space sensing capabilities are expected to operate in, and the level of performance required to deliver quality data.

“EOS was proud to play a role in tracking Artemis II,” said Dr James Bennett, Executive Vice President, EOS Space Systems. “Our focus on real-time monitoring of the space environment and high-precision tracking is why EOS is trusted by space agencies, satellite operators and defence organisations globally.”
